McElrath, James F., 94, McVeytown, passed away Thursday January 23, 2025, at home. Born October 22, 1930, Thompsontown, son of the late Clayton and Jane (Shoop) McElrath. Preceded in death by his wife, Shirley A. (Magnuson) McElrath; a son, Gary McElrath; and siblings, Dale, Richard, Donald, Carl, Jean, Fred, Tom, Nancy and John. Survived by his sons, James McElrath and wife, Nancy; Gregory McElrath; Scott McElrath and wife, Kelly; Jeffrey McElrath and wife, Donna; 8 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren; and brothers, William and Harry McElrath. Mr. McElrath was a graduate of John Harris High School in Harrisburg. Following school, he honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, something that he was very proud of. After his time in the service, he attended Shippensburg University where he received his bachelor’s in education. Mr. McElrath began his career in education as a business teacher at Council Rock High School. During his time there teaching he was also a football and baseball coach and coached many outstanding athletes and young men. Eventually Mr. McElrath transitioned to administration where he served as the business manager for Council Rock School District. He would retire as an administrator for the Palisades School District. Upon retirement from education, he entered business ownership of the White House Inn Bar & Grille in McVeytown. He enjoyed over 20 years of success there with his faithful wife, Shirley, by his side helping run things and cook there famous chili. After finally retiring Mr. McElrath enjoyed his time golfing at the American Legion Country Club and enjoying nature—feeding birds and other wildlife at his home. He was a member of the Simpson Hunt American Legion Post 107 in Mount Union and a supporter of the ASPCA. He will be remembered for his work ethic and sense of patriotism. Family and friends will be received on Thursday January 30, 2025, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 12 noon, at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Haven Rest Memorial Park.
